This page is dedicated to some of the great midfielder's who have graced St James's Park over the years. Sadly many did not
win honours with the Toon but certainly won the Hearts of the fanatical Toon Army Fans. Over the next few months this page will be updated, so if you have a Toon Favourite please E mail
me and I will endeavour to publish that individuals profile.
Peter Beardsley
1983-7 1993-7
Born on Tyneside on 18 January 1961, Peter Beardsley had three spells with the Magpies.
He was released the first time round by then-manager Bill McGarry as a teenager, and it was left to former Newcastle skipper Bob Moncur to give him his first chance as a professional
when he signed him for Carlisle United. A striker of supreme quality, he took the roundabout route back to his home-town club, via Carlisle and then Vancouver Whitecaps.
Arthur Cox then brought him back home for £125,000 to team up with Kevin Keegan in the
1983-84 promotion-winning side. Without doubt, the local lad ranks right up there with the best of men who have pulled on the black and white shirt. All the managers Beardo' has
played under have commented on his enthusiasm and work-rate as well as his ability to score spectacular goals
often when the chips are down. Tempted away to Liverpool for a record £1.9 million four years later, Peter won
league and FA Cup honours before Everton paid £1 million for him in 1991. When Keegan, by now manager of
Newcastle, paid £1.5 million for Peter in July 93, many doubted the wisdom of such a fee for a 32-year-old. But
such was his form that ten more England caps followed before Peter announced his international retirement
with 59 caps to his name Peter Beardsley was awarded the MBE for his services to football in 1995 but he
remains the same level-headed lad he's always been. Much travelled though he may be, Beardsley is
a Newcastle man through and through. It is said he is destined to return back to the club he loves so much as a coach or manager in the future.
