Tony Green
1971-1973
Born on the 13 October 1946 in Glasgow. In 1971 He signed from Blackpool for £150.000
and labelled the new Alan ball. Tony had the pace of a leopard over ten yards; although tragically his career at Newcastle was short lived he was a real crowd pleaser and became a
firm favourite with the fans. The arrival of Green had an immediate effect on a team that were
languishing at the bottom of the First Division (then the Top Flight). Suddenly the magpies had a player who could open up defences with fantastic pace. Working with Malcolm
Macdonald, who joined the club at the same time, he brought to the team a period of prosperity. Sadly at the
start of the 1972-73 season he suffered a serious knee injury. This lead to the early retirement of one of the most gifted players that had graced St James Park aged only 27.
After football, Tony decided to train as a teacher and returned to the Fylde coast. To this day the name Tony
Greene is still a firm favourite with fans. The fact that his memory lives on even though he played only 33 league games for the club is testament to the kind of player he was
