The Toon were given a lesson in how to take chances after crashing 5-3 to Man United. Paul Scholes, brilliantly incisive in midfield, opened Manchester United's
account on Saturday with a 25th-minute volley and Solskjaer hit the fifth after van Nistelrooy had taken his tally to 50 by completing a 15-minute hat-trick in the 53rd.
The Impressive Dutchman's first two goals, a close-range header from a Michael Silvestre cross which should have been dealt with by the Toon much earlier and a
stoppage time tap-in from Diego Forlan's low shot, gave Manchester United a 3-1 halftime lead.
Newcastle scored an equaliser in the 35th minute when Bernard hit a fluke cross that sailed over the stranded Bartez and in off the far post.
Toon Captain Alan Shearer appeared to have put Newcastle back into the match when he scored his 100th premier league goal with a shot into the top corner from a
tapped Gary Speed free kick.
But the Manchester side restored their two-goal lead with van Nistelrooy apparently lucky not to be pulled back for offside, racing into the box to meet
Forlan's pull-back close to Shay Given's right-hand post with a crisp header.
Bellamy headed Newcastle's third past three static United defenders after Shearer had headed Nolberto Solano's corner into the middle 15 minutes from time. The
Toon showed how Poor their Defence is and will be found out further more as the season goes on if it is not sorted when the Transfer window opens in January.

The Toon carried on from where they left off in the Champions League to bank another three Premiership points by coming from behind to beat Southampton at Home.
The Magpies' powers of recovery were tested to the limit in more than one sense as they put weary muscles and minds to the test once again and rescued victory
from the jaws of defeat.
All thoughts of European glory were erased just 66 seconds into a hard-fought contest when James Beattie blasted home a superb volley, but Shola Ameobi's
41st-minute equaliser as Newcastle raised their game set the scene for full-back Aarron Hughes to win it nine minutes into the second half.

Newcastle struggled with Arsenal's physical approach, with Patrick Vieira, just back after suspension, particularly dominant.
The Gunners' captain should have opened the scoring in the 13th minute but headed wide with the goal gaping.
The visitors' resistance was broken in the 25th minute by a well-crafted goal. Freddy Ljungberg's raking cross-field ball found Henry on the right, he spotted
Oleg Luzhny's overlapping run and the Ukrainian squared for Wiltord to tap home.
With the pressure relentless, Ljungberg almost stretched the lead soon after with a lob that nestled on the top netting. He also had a point-blank effort saved.
Hugo Viana's long-range effort that cannoned off the underside of the crossbar just before halftime showed that the match was far from over.
Arsenal continued to dominate after the break but without making clear-cut chances. Substitute Pieres came closest late on when he scooped Wiltord's cross over.
Henry also dragged a shot wide when put through by Pires, while Newcastle failed to register a single shot on target in the second half.

The Toon's recent revival has continued as they beat local rivalsMiddlesbrough 2-0 at St James's Park to record their fifth win in six premier league outings.
Goals from Ameobi in the first half and Stephen Caldwell late in the second sealed victory for Bobby Robson's side who moved up one place above
Middlesbrough into eighth.
A miserable night for the visitors was completed when French defender Queudruo was sent off for the second match in a row after a second book able offence.
The first genuine chance of the game fell to Middlesbrough's Italian striker Maccarone whose close range header from a tight angle was cleared off the line by
defender Hughes.
Cameroon midfielder Geremi also went close for Boro with a long-range effort that Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given did well to keep out by diving low to his
right.
But it was the home side who took the lead in the 20th minute when England under-21 striker Ameobi juggled with the ball on the edge of the area before firing a
crisp left-foot shot past goalkeeper Schwarzer.
Maccarone had a penalty appeal turned down when he was felled by Hughes, but Newcastle also cried foul when an Shearer goal was ruled out after Ameobi was
adjudged to have infringed.
Newcastle's French winger Robert attempted an ambitious volley from way out on the left but his stinging shot only found the side netting.
Early in the second half, Maccarone went close again, rattling the post with a powerful low drive from just outside the area.
The temperature of the match began to rise midway through the second half and Newcastle captain Shearer had his name taken by referee Graham Barber for
protesting that his shirt had been pulled in the area.
Portuguese midfielder Viana came on for Robert in the 70th minute and made an instant impact with a dipping free kick that whistled over the bar.
Ameobi had the chance of a second goal 15 minutes from time when he connected with Olivier Bernard's cross from the left, but his shot was blocked in a
smothering tackle by Queudrue.
Shearer, hunting his 100th league goal for Newcastle, looked to have scored with a powerful close range header moments later but Schwarzer did superbly to palm
the ball clear.
However, the Boro keeper was at fault moments later when he spilled a straightforward corner from Viana and defender Caldwell swept home the loose ball three
minutes from time.

After last weekends thumping at Blackburn and a well deserved victory over Italian Giants Juventus hopes were high that the Toon would
take all three points against Charlton.
As always the Toon made hard work of taking all three points, dominating the first half-hour only to go a goal down.
A poor clearance by Andy O'Brien spun away to Charlton South African striker Shaun Bartlett who easily beat off a challenge from Toon Centre half Titus Bramble
before shooting home from close range.
The Toon went in search of the equaliser and were level seven minutes later, through Andy Griffin.
Griffin, whose cross was deflected in by Juventus keeper in midweek, left no doubt to who scored the Toon’s equaliser, hitting home a powerful shot from the
edge of the area after receiving the ball from Shearer.
The winner was an even better goal. With 58 minutes on the clock neat play involving Shearer, Solano and Ameobi in a beautiful passing move set up the chance
for Robert to hit a magnificent left-foot shot. The Toon should have gone further ahead but the impressive Robert missed an easy chance but his headed effort went wide with the goal wide open. Speed had a
header hit the post from close range from a Robert corner.

The Toon arrived at Ewood on Saturday in confident mood, having won their last three premiership games to move into the top half of
the table
But they got off to a terrible start when defender the erratic Dabizas was sent off for deliberate handball in only the fourth minute after handling a shot from
former Man U hit man Dwight York on the goal-line after some sloppy play by Shay Given.
David Dunn scored from the resulting penalty and the midfielder then doubled the lead with a curling shot from 12 metres on eight minutes following clever work
by former Toon man Gillespie.
Yorke should have added a third after 18 minutes but headed the ball straight at Given from six yards out.
Toon Captain Shearer put Newcastle back in the frame when he scored his 300th career goal from the penalty spot in the 36th minute and then levelled the scores
with a bullet header early into the second half
But Rovers hit back at once through Taylor after the all too familiar bad defending and effectively sealed the win with his two goals in just nine minutes as
their numerical advantage proved decisive. Andy Griffin scored an own goal to give the Toon the embarrassment of having 5 goals against them for the first time under Sir Bobby in the Premiership.
Sir Bobby must get the defence in order if the Toon are to achieve a respectable position come the end of the season.

The Toon came from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 at St James' Park and make it three wins out of the last three Premiership games. Newcastle enjoyed the lions'
share of play in the first half with West Brom happy to get men behind the ball and play on the break. The Magpies' best efforts came from Andy Griffin and Solano.
Newcastle fell behind after failing to clear their lines when a Baggies attack broke down. Nikos Dabizas dispossessed the impressive Jason Roberts in the area
but the ball found fellow Baggies player Balis who hit the ball at goal, although Given managed to get a hand to his shot, the Slovakian wing-back's effort was too strong and found the back of the net.
On the stoke of half time Alan Shearer pulled the Toon level after Balis cut out Kieron Dyer's cross but his touch was harshly deemed to constitute a back pass
after keeper Joe Murphy scooped the ball up.
Mr Foy from Merseyside awarded a free-kick and Shearer made no mistake from seven yards after the ball was rolled to him. Newcastle could even have gone
in ahead at the break but Murphy - on his full Premiership debut - saved smartly from speed merchant Craig Bellamy.
At the start of the second half Bellamy had another golden chance to hand his side the lead but his free header flew over the bar.
West Brom's dogged resistance was eventually broken down 20 minutes from time when Solano knocked down Gary Speed's deep cross for Shearer to hit his second of
the game to send the Toon into the top six and condemn the visitors to their fourth away Premiership defeat.
Shearer thought he had completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later but play was called back for offside when he fired home after Bellamy's shot was parried into
his path.
The Baggies almost rescued a point immediately after Shearer's disallowed effort through substitute Lee Hughes. The strike ace cut in from the right before
launching a stinging shot but Given turned the ball around his post for a corner.

Goals by Nobby Solano and Shola Ameobi Gave the Toon their first away win of the season with a disciplined 2-0 victory at Birmingham.
After some magical team work set up by Gary Speed Peruvian midfielder Solano opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a crashing drive into the bottom corner following a move which also involved Shearer and
Frenchman Robert.
Ameobi, on as a late substitute, for man of the match Solano secured the points in the final minute when again some impressive work by Toon captain Alan Shearer
sent him clean through. The Youngster was lucky when his first effort was saved by Vaesen only to rebound back off Ameobi and into the net.
Devlin was Birmingham’s main goal threat. His powerfully-hit free-kick was parried out by Shay Givin. He was later to make a wonderful save to deny
Stern John's left-foot piledriver .
Devlin came within inches of equalising for City five minutes before the break when his curling effort dipped just over Given's bar and Nikos Dabizas was on
hand to deny Devlin and John again after the interval as Blues enjoyed a good spell of possession.
But Ameobi sealed the victory in the dying stages as Newcastle dug in to record their first victory away from St James' Park this campaign and move up to 10th
in the Premiership table.

Striker Craig Bellamy's goal inside the first two minutes ensured the Toon got back to winning ways that moves them out of the bottom three.
They made a dream start when Shearer found Dyer, who in turn released Bellamy before he raced towards goal and slotted the ball coolly under the advancing
Thomas Sorensen to make it 1-0 after just 93 seconds. However, despite that frenetic opening, chances were generally at a premium in the first half.
Sunderland new signing Tore Andre Flo saw two headers fly over as Sunderland responded well to the shock of falling behind early on and the Norway striker
almost brought the Black Cats level in bizarre fashion when Shay Given's clearance cannoned off his back, forcing the Newcastle keeper to race back and retrieve the ball from virtually the goal-line.
Then, just as Sunderland seemed capable of finding an equaliser, Shearer struck a typical second when Nolberto Solano touched his free-kick to him and Shearer
fired home from the edge of the area to give the hosts a two-goal advantage at the break.
The second period followed a similar pattern to the first with a number of misplaced passes from both sides making for a rather untidy game at times. Claudio
Reyna tested Given with a 20-yard strike and Flo fired over as Sunderland looked for a way back into the game, while at the other end Bellamy was somewhat harshly booked for trying to win a penalty when he fell
under the challenge of the impressive Mathew Piper in the area.
The Black cats never really looked like finding the goal that would have given them a chance of rescuing something from the game, and indeed Newcastle could
have added to their lead as the second half wore on as Bellamy first headed wide and then fired straight at Sorensen while Shearer saw an effort blocked in injury time.
In the end the damage was done in the first period and a sorry Sunderland side slumped off knowing the defeat moves Newcastle above them in the Premiership and
heaps more pressure on the already under-fire Monkey Heed Peter Reid.

The Toon started the day second from bottom of the Premiership and desperately in need of a win but Claudio Ranieri's side soon put a dent in those hopes as
Gudjohnsen and Zola scored on 14 and 26 minutes to hand the Blues a comfortable half-time lead.
Gudjohnsen added a second on 58 minutes to rub salt into the Geordie travelling fans' wounds as their side continue to look for a first win at Chelsea's home
since 1986.
Newcastle were struggling to find their rhythm and they were suitably punished just before the quarter-hour mark when Dutchman Zenden again provided the
ammunition for Gudjohnsen and this time his header was perfectly placed to find the back of the net off the post.
Sir Bobby Robson's men gradually began to stem the tide but still they failed to create anything but half-chances before the home team grabbed a fortunate
second - Zola's free-kick deflecting off the wall and wrong-footing the keeper to find the target for his fifth goal of the season.
Gudjohnsen came close to a third with a shot from distance but it whistled wide, while the Magpies' best opportunity fell for Dyer right on the stroke of
half-time when he raced on to a Bellamy pass through the middle but Melchiot recovered the situation.
No doubt buoyed by a few choice words from their manager after the break, Newcastle came out with all guns blazing and Shearer came close to reducing the
deficit when he met Hughes cross but could only direct his effort over the bar.
The resurgence was short-lived, though, as the Blues were gifted a third to kill off any comeback hopes - Given's pass to Hughes left the Irishman under
pressure and Zola was able to nick the ball off his feet before feeding an unmarked Gudjohnsen to slide home.

A suspect early goal from Aussie Strong front-man Mark Viduka exposed Newcastle's defence once again in a match that had everything.
The Toon welcomed Andy O'Brien, Shola Ameobi and Robert back into the line-up, but were a goal down after only four minutes of play.
The impressive Kewell skipped passed his marker enabling him to break down the left beating the Toons effort to catch Leeds off side and shaped to take on Shay Given, but as the
Irish keeper began to come out the Aussie cut the ball back to compatriot Viduka for an easy side-foot goal who earlier did look in an offside position.
It was certainly not all one-way traffic and the Toon had chances of their own, through Amobie, Bernard, and notably an Alan Shearer shot on the turn that was well saved by Man of
The Match Paul Robinson
French winger Robert was also in hungry mood and had one drive from distance well saved and one fly just over the crossbar, while Robinson also had to be alert to an Ameobi shot from
close range as the young striker wriggled free in the box.
The second half saw Newcastle up the tempo further, with Solano almost scoring with a drive across the face of the goal, then Shearer broke through some lax defending, but his lack
of pace forced him to shoot early and Robinson saved comfortably.
Bernard put an excellent cross into the box which Ameobi could not get himself over and he put over the bar from just a couple of yards out, but although Newcastle could not equalise
the action was hugely enjoyable to watch.
With 25 minutes to go Sir Bobby brought on Hugo Viana and Bellamy, but it was Leeds who came close to another goal. Kewell jetted down the right wing this time, but his late shot was
straight at Given who immediately picked himself up to deny Viduka on the rebound.
O'Brien bounced a header from a corner over the bar when totally unmarked in the box, and then Robinson pushed a smart Solano drive over as Newcastle were now in total control.
But they were cruelly denied a share of the spoils as Leeds' resolute defending was rewarded by another goal on the break late on.
Smith drove the ball home after Lee Bowyer's shot had been blocked by Titus Bramble and Leeds held on for all three points.

Yet another exciting game between these two sides was on show last night, Alan Shearer grabbed a dramatic equaliser for the Toon with
two minutes remaining to earn a 2-2 draw. The Toon striker could have nicked all 3pts if he had placed the ball better in injury time. Liverpool got the goal their play deserved after a moment of slackness from Shay
Given who hit a poor ball out of goal to the unfortunate Norberto Solano who was unable to control the ball and lost possession to Hamann who surged into the area to send a shot beyond Given into the corner.
Owen came close to getting a second when his delicate chip finished the wrong side the post. Graham Poll as always was at the centre of controversy
awarding the home team several free kicks that were well off the mark. The Toon conceded 26 free-kicks while Liverpool’s had only 6, which meant they were able to keep the Shaky Toon defence under pressure.
Owen finally got off the mark for the season in the 73rd minute when he stroked home a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Dabizas's challenge on Hyypia when Gerard swung in a corner from the right.
Liverpool had so much possession and so many goal attempts they must be wondering how they didn't manage to sew up the points. Toon Boss Sir Bobby
made a triple substitution in the 62nd minute bringing on Jenas, Bellamy and Robert for Solano, Lomana LuaLua and Viana.
Newcastle suddenly came alive and Dudek did well to tip Robert's fierce shot onto the base of the post. Shearer could not connect well with the bound and was
cleared by Hyypia. Heskey should have added a third, only to send a header over the top from four yards before Newcastle pulled a goal back.
After some excellent play by Bellamy the much missed Toon striker rolled the ball across the face of the area and Speed was on hand to tap it in. This made the
Toon hungry and in the 88th minute Shearer powered the corner ball from Robert into the net Shearer almost got the winner but Dudek made a
marvellous point blank save following Robert's cross.

The Toon eased their way into the Champions League beating Zeljeznicar, 4-0 (5-0 on aggregate).
After an apprehensive start the Toon eased the fans fears when Kierion Dyer set the ball rolling with a beautifully judged lob over advancing keeper Kennan
Hagasic. On the 37 minute mark, Gary Speed laid the ball into the inform Lomana Lua Lua path who after some fancy footwork hit a superb curling shot making it 2-0 before the break.
Had it not been for Shay Given who was there to deny Sanjin Radonja and Sead Seferovic, the half-time score could have been a little different.
The Toon took time to settle down after the break and a perfectly weighted pass from Dyer for Hugo Viana who blasted the ball past the helpless Kennan Hagasic
to make it 3-0. And once defender Sanel Jahic had been sent off in the 70th minute for a lunge at substitute Shola Ameobi when the youngster looked certain to score, the visitors were broken, Shearer completed
the job with 10 minutes remaining, beating the offside trap to reach another Dyer pass and fire past Hagasic.
Shearer could have had four goals if things had gone his way the Toon hero and on 58 minutes Hagasic pulled off a fine save to deny Shearer. Minutes later
Shearer hit the post when he beat the keeper hands down but saw his powerful shot come back off the post. Again from a well worked set piece he saw his shot bounced up and hit the bar, then he also had a goal
disallowed for offside, but by then, the game was over.
This will have been a great tonic for the Toon player’s after such a disappointing result at Main Road on Saturday.

Kevin Keegan’s men deserved this win as the Toons performance was that of a Sunday League side, Darren Huckerby's first-half header
was enough to give City their first win of the season.
City dominated the early stages, with Huckerby denied by Shay Given's legs before the City striker had an effort cleared off the line by the impressive Dabizas.
New French striker Nicolas Anelka then curled a shot wide, with Newcastle having their first shot on target just before the half-hour mark when Schmeichel smothered an effort from Speed.
An amazing miss by Marc Vivien Foe should have put the home side ahead but his header went over an empty goal. City deservedly took the lead when Anelka's
cross was met by Niclas Jensen, whose shot was parried by Given only for Huckerby to head home from a few yards out, there was more than a hint of offside but the goal stood. Newcastle should have levelled soon
after when Schmeichel denied Lomano Tresor Lua Lua, only for Dyer to drill the rebound wide of a gaping net.
Schmeichel denied Dyer before the break, while at the other end Huckerby saw his shot blocked by Given seconds before the interval. Former Toon player Sylvain
Distin's must have thought he was still a Toon player at the start of the second half when he passed the ball to Dyer but he blazed over, while City's Shaun Wright-Phillips fired into the side-netting and Anelka saw
his low drive saved by Given. Schmeichel made two more excellent saves from Jermaine Jenas and Dyer as the Toon pressed hard for a late equaliser, but
